Tile Roofing FAQs
What is tile roofing?
Tile roofing consists of individual tiles made from materials like clay, concrete, or slate, which are installed in overlapping rows over an insulated underlayment. 40 lb. Underlayment is the most common type of padding underneath tile roofing for new homes, but at Renewal Roofing we use the far more durable Polyglass TU Max underlayment, which is built to last. Tile roofing provides a durable, long-lasting roofing option with a distinct aesthetic, commonly found in Mediterranean, Spanish, or Southwestern-style homes.
How long does a tile roof last?
Tile roofs are known for their longevity and can last 50 years or more with proper maintenance. The lifespan can vary depending on factors such as the material, installation, and weather conditions. Clay and concrete tiles are the most common, though clay—while being aesthetically beautiful—tends to be more brittle than other tile roofing materials.
Are tile roofs more expensive than other types of roofs?
Tile roofs can be more expensive upfront than asphalt shingles or other roofing materials due to the cost of materials, but their long lifespan and low maintenance needs make them a cost-effective option over time.
Are tile roofs heavy?
Yes, tile roofs are significantly heavier than other types of roofing materials like asphalt shingles. Before installing a tile roof, it’s essential to ensure that your home’s structure can support the weight of the tiles. Our professional roofing contractors can assess this during an inspection and determine whether a sturdy tile roof is right for your Tucson home. Contact us for a free tile roof installation consult.
How do I know if my tile roof needs repair?
Signs that your tile roof may need repair include:
- Cracked, broken, or missing tiles
- Leaks inside the home or water stains on the ceiling
- Visible moss or algae growth on the tiles
- Tiles that appear loose or out of alignment
What causes leaks in tile roofing?
Leaks in a tile roof come from cracks in the waterproof underlayment, allowing water to seep through the roof. While 40 lb. Underlayment is the most commonly used material beneath tile roofing, it does not provide as much durability or leak protection as other underlaying materials. That is why when we replace or install a new tile roof at Renewal Roofing, we prefer to use Polyglass TU Max underlayment. When replacing or installing a new tile roof, we first remove the old tiles, strip away all of the lower-quality underlayment to be replaced by the TU Max, ensure the roof meets all safety code standards, then install the new tiles on top of the Polyglass base. This ensures that your home is left with a high-quality, durable, and leakproof covering that, with proper maintenance, will protect your home for decades to come.
Can tile roofs withstand extreme weather?
Tile roofs are highly resistant to extreme weather conditions. Clay and concrete tiles can withstand heavy rain, high winds, and even hail, making them an excellent choice for enduring Tucson’s harsh summer rays and stormy monsoons.
Are tile roofs energy efficient?
Yes, tile roofs are energy efficient. They provide excellent thermal insulation, which can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce cooling costs. Additionally, light-colored or reflective tiles can reflect more sunlight, improving energy efficiency during the warmer months.
How do I maintain a tile roof?
Tile roofs require minimal maintenance, but it’s still important to:
- Inspect the roof regularly for broken, cracked, or missing tiles
- Clean the gutters and valleys to ensure proper water flow
- Remove any debris and algae buildup from the tiles
Can tile roofs be repaired if a tile is damaged?
Yes, individual tiles can be replaced or repaired without having to replace the entire roof. Tile roofs are relatively easy to repair, as long as the damage is isolated to a few tiles. It’s best to have a professional handle the repairs to ensure proper installation and to avoid further damage to the roof. Our highly-awarded team is licensed, bonded, and insured, as well as Home Advisor Screened and BBB Accredited; we take the utmost care while repairing your tile roofing.
What types of tiles are available for tile roofing?
The most common types of tiles used in tile roofing are:
- Clay tiles: Known for their pleasing traditional look, often seen in Mediterranean or Spanish-style homes
- Concrete tiles: More affordable than clay, but very durable, and available in a variety of colors and styles
- Composite tiles: Made from a mixture of materials like fiberglass, resin, and recycled products. Composite tiles are designed to mimic the look of traditional clay or slate tiles but are often lighter and more affordable while still being very durable. They are resistant to cracking, fading, and weather damage, making them an excellent option for the harsh Tucson climate.
